Destination Details: Umbria.

Where is it?

Umbria is a region in central Italy bordered by Tuscany to the west and the north, Le Marche to the east and Lazio to the south. It includes Lake Trasimeno and the Marmore Falls, (one of the highest in Europe) and is crossed by the River Tiber. The regional capital is Perugia.

Airports

Perugia San Francesco d'Assisi – Umbria International Airport (PEG) from the UK.

Fly to Rome from the USA and then car/train to Umbria (roughly 2 hrs).

What is the region famous for?

The region is characterised by hills, mountains, valleys and historical towns such as the university centre of Perugia, Assisi (a World Heritage Site associated with St. Francis of Assisi) Norcia, Città di Castello, Gubbio, Spoleto, Orvieto, Todi, Castiglione del Lago, Narni, Amelia and Terni, the city par excellence for lovers. Fun fact, many couples choose February 14 (Valentine’s Day), patron saint of the Umbrian capital and protector of engaged couples, as their wedding day.

Umbria is the only region in Italy to have neither a coastline nor a common border with another country. Umbria is often referred to as “The green heart of Italy” and is famous for Pecorino cheeses, Norcia ham and olive oil.

Why get married here?

  1. History: This region is famous mainly for its strong medieval connotation: monuments, basilicas and churches, villages and ancient villas. This makes it a dream destination for your guests, a journey not only through wonderful landscapes, but also a real journey through time: Umbria is incredible in its disarming simplicity.

  2. Food: The habits and customs of the Umbrian people are strongly influenced by medieval traditions, and its exquisite cuisine is the result of ancient recipes that have been handed down for centuries and centuries.

  3. Landscape: The area is a much like Tuscany but feels a little more rustic. It has an untouched feel.

What style of weddings happen in this region?

The naturalness of the region and the predominantly hilly landscape lends itself to relaxed and rustic weddings with an outdoor reception. On the flip side, Umbria also has a lot of luxe historic venues with breathtaking panoramic views, ideal for a more glam and polished affair.

Price -

Venues and suppliers in Umbria are moderately priced. It is not a sought after or trend-led destination (like for example Puglia and Lake Como), so you do get a bit more value for money, personalisation and a good value wedding experience.

Things to know before booking.

Venues in Umbria tend to be a bit further from the airports than say Tuscany. Perugia airport is well located but flights tend to only fly there from major cities.

Suppliers tend to come from Tuscany or Rome although there are also some great local ones.

In terms of climate the best time of year for a wedding in Umbria is June (good weather but not the hottest of the summer, land not parched and still green) or September (again not too hot and grape harvest time so vines are full).
