Getting timeless wedding photos with film

Have you considered taking your wedding photos old-school with film and pair the romantic, hazy hues of Italy’s La Dolce Vita with a photography style which captures in a more raw, natural way.

Film photography (not to be confused with wedding films shot by a wedding videographer) is photography recorded by using a roll of light-sensitive film. The camera's shutter exposes the film to light, creating the photographs.

Olya Kobruseva is a trusted photographer on La Lista’s Directory so who better to ask ‘why does film create timeless wedding photos?’

Who is film for?

“Capturing both intimate weddings and large celebrations; the more relaxed timeline you have the more advantages are there to use film camera.

However, with a tight timeline of a wedding day, digital can be used, with the film camera reserved for capturing the highlights of the day. Giving the best of both methods.”

Is Film riskier?

“My second shooter is always prepared to help me document the event using digital cameras. And there’s no event where I don’t have a backup and plan B and C, if necessary.

It's essential to recognize the strengths of each medium and skilfully coordinate their use to deliver the best possible results for my couples. There is never any compromise in the quality of my work.”

How can couples work with you?

“I adore exploring charming Italian villages in Tuscany with couples while capturing their engagement portraits or the entire beautiful wedding celebration. I enjoy photographing honeymoons by infinity pools in Ravello, or capturing the intimate proposals on a boat ride in Capri or Portofino. From the iconic North to the serene South, every region of Italy holds beauty for me.”

Why should you consider film?

1. Timeless aesthetic

Film photography often produces a classic, timeless look that many love. The colours, tones, and grain of film can create a unique visual that digital often struggles to replicate.

2. Artistic expression

From selecting the right film stock to the deliberate, thoughtful approach required for each shot, film allows for a deeper level of artistic expression.

3. Attention to detail

With limited exposures per roll, each photo is carefully considered and thoughtfully captured, whilst working closely with the couple.

4. Natural and authentic feel

Film photography is known for its ability to capture natural skin tones and a softer, more organic look.

5. Quick

Film photography often requires less post-processing compared to digital photography, therefore fast deliveries to clients.
