How to find your wedding dress, from the owner of The Fall

Despite having only set up The Fall  just over a year ago, Annelise really knows her stuff when it comes to bridal fashion. She’s obsessed with the quality of dresses, the shapes and the materials used. She intuitively knows what works for each individual that comes through her store.

“Brides are nervous to come in and try dresses – there are outdated and traditional perspectives on wedding dress shopping. But it can be super relaxed. At our loft everyone leaves having a great time. It’s not intimidating, there’s no judgement (size, shape, opinion, budget), we’re just here to help you have an enjoyable experience.”

And of course, this is how dress shopping should be! Right now with wedding dates, size and location changing at short notice, Annelise reassures us, ‘your dress won’t expire and most contemporary dresses suit almost any setting’.

So, how do you find your dress?

1. Shop around – online

Spend some time looking at designers on Instagram, real wedding blogs, supplier showcases and pick your styles.

2. Find the stockists

And once you’ve found them, give them a call. See if you get a good feeling from the call and the store offers the kind of experience that will make you feel as comfortable as possible – despite the pandemic.

3. Shortlist your shops

Annelise says, ‘It’s really important to choose the right store. Make sure you feel a connection with the brand and the team before you get there’. Going to the wrong store can lead to a bad experience that can affect the rest of your dress shopping experience.

‘We recommend going to just 3 stores max. You can try on up to 8 styles in one visit’.

4. Make sure you feel good

It literally doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks and if you don’t follow your heart, you won’t be comfortable on the day. And remember, most dresses have a minimum of 6 months’ lead time. Off-the-peg solutions are ready to wear but you should budget time for some alterations.

Thanks to lockdown, the wedding dress buying experience has changed a little. The Fall offer a free virtual consultation for free to help you shortlist styles and show off any new dresses that might suit. You can then order a home try on.

The loft space should open again in April and we can’t wait to visit!
