Sara + Federico’s traditional Northern Italy wedding

A little bit of rain couldn’t dampen the energy of Sara + Federico’s wedding day in the bride’s home region of South Tyrol, close to the border of Austria. The Italian couple had no doubt that their wedding day would take place in this bellissimo country but figuring out logistics and finding a suitable venue was as equally important for these natives.

With strong Italian/Austrian influences felt across their celebration - in the folklore music, dancing and from their choice of venue, which was idyllic Italian Renaissance meets German Baroque residences. We love how the guests celebrated the marriage by the throwing of lavender and olive leaves, symbolising love, peace and protection against bad energy.

The Engagement

“Federico and I use to go to Venice every autumn since we stay together.

A cold evening in October I came home from work and found a little note on the kitchen table saying "Venice tomorrow". Federico is not a guy who books hotels and I was pretty surprised. What a hotel he booked - we stayed at the Danieli! After dinner he asked the waiter if he could call a water taxi and that's when I realized that it must be the moment! He took me to the Abbazia San Giorgio Maggiore and with a view on Piazza San Marco he went on his knees and proposed. Unforgettable!”

How did you choose your venue?

“We both knew that we were getting married in South Tyrol, the region I am originally from. To find something logistically feasible, we decided to look at locations close to Bolzano and not too far away from the Lake Garda where Federico grew up. We booked some appointments at locations and we fell immediately in love with Cason Hirschprunn. The residence dates back to the early Middle Ages and has been extended time and again over the centuries, influenced by the spirit of the times. It's a nice combo of Italian Renaissance and southern German Baroque.”

How did you approach your wedding planning to make sure the day was what you wanted and felt personal to you?

“Paradeis events represented by the fabulous event planner Lara helped us get everything organized.

In the meantime, I got crazy about wedding blogs, Pinterest, bought all wedding magazines to get inspired and do everything right. Also, I listened to a really nice Italian podcast to learn the etiquette of a perfect wedding.”

What was the biggest challenge when planning your wedding?

“Federico and I were aligned on everything we wanted. The planning was pretty smooth, Lara had everything under control and we could enjoy planning in a totally relaxed way.

The only challenge was the tight schedule - the wedding planner told us we had planned to many things and maximum coordination was required to fit everything in. I would do it exactly the same - people enjoyed every moment and most of them stayed with us until 3 AM.”

Did anything go wrong, when planning or on the day?

“Nothing serious, we were a but unlucky because it rained. It was ok, it cooled up the air and only lasted 10 minutes.”

Biggest wedding win

Location: there are a lot of different spots with changing atmosphere that helps keeping people surprised, keeping a good mood

Wine: Alois Lageder is one of the best wine makers in South Tyrol and guests are still telling us they never drank such good wine in any other wedding

Folklore group in the kitchen and during aperitivo: Schuhplattler Tramin doing the typical dance, Frisch g'strichn ensuring the most beautiful music I ever heard during the ceremony in the church

Stand out moment

“WOW - difficult to say. I can think of two moments: getting out of the church with all our friends waiting for us and throwing lavender and olive leaves at us. The dinner where we asked our parents and best friends to make speeches and with the DJ perfectly mixing lounge music while eating and Schlagerhits during courses to make people dance.”

Best styling feature

“I am sure it was my dress - a flowery Andrea Sedici dress with the most beautiful tail I could ever have dreamed of.”
