Planning the best wedding ever: picking your photographer

Photography: The Unbridled

Picking your wedding photographer can feel like an overwhelming decision. You want to make sure you pick someone that you totally click with (pun 100% intended) and someone that will ultimately deliver the photos you’ve always dreamed of.

We caught up with completely epic wedding photographer The Unbridled to get her advice on how to find and pick the right photographer for you.

The Unbridled

Named as Cosmopolitans 5th Best Wedding Photographer in the World, Carla creates luxury wedding photographs for the fiercely in love. She believes in marriages that have meaning, documenting not just how it looks but how it feels. Her images are romantic, timeless and seriously dreamy and we asked her for some of her best advice…

“What is important to consider when picking your wedding photographer?”

For me, connection is key. My sole role on a wedding day is to make you as comfortable as possible so I can see the real and genuine you and can translate this into my imagery as honestly as possible. So connection is key.

Also, it's really important to consider a photographer’s style…do you like documentary photography, traditional photography, or something more creative. And remember, these images will be around for a long time so they need to be timeless.

“Any tips for creating a shortlist of potential photographers?”

Read photographer’s websites and brochures properly and ask for a Zoom call (or in-person meet-up if possible) to see if you connect. Ask to see full galleries from the weddings they have shot rather than just the highlight reel. This way you can see how the whole day is documented right from the getting-ready-shots to the party.

Think about shooting and editing styles, what draws you in. What emotions are exuded through the imagery? Consider the photographer’s use of light; this is a photographer’s KEY skill. Knowing how to use light creatively and effectively is imperative to good quality work.

“What questions should you ask your potential photographer? Any questions not to ask?!”

Ask them about their ways of working and how the day will flow. Also, ask how long they allow for portraits and whether you should do one or two different portrait sessions for the variation in light. And how long do they allow for group shots and do they have a cap on how many group shots they will take?

I would recommend not asking for a discount! We as photographers spend a lot of time working out our pricing accurately to reflect our work and our place within the market.

“Is there anything specific to consider when looking for a destination wedding photographer?"

I would consider their hours of working. Do you want a photographer who puts a limit on how many hours they will shoot or would you rather them be there to document the whole story? Speak to them about whether you want your welcome dinner/post wedding celebrations documented etc. Consider and ask them about how they will work with the landscape and sunlight at your chosen destination and venue.
